Chapter twenty-seven
The following morning, the team were desperate to get the questioning underway. They were ready for Cairney in the interview room before nine. The door opened and two officers ushered him in.
Jenny said, âGood morning, Mr Cairney.â
One escorting officer spoke.
âHeâs in something of a strange mood this morning. Acting the goat. I hope you have better luck with him than we did. He threw his cornflakes over the floor and peed on them. Didnât you, Mr Cairney? What was that about?â
Hamish ignored the man and went round and sat in front of Jenny and Walter.
She set the machine running and stated who was present.
âToday,â said Walter, âweâd like to talk about Emily Chatteris.â
Hamish smiled and said, âIâm a goshawk. Did you know?â and he stood up before them and flapped his arms hard, creating a breeze, disturbing loose papers on the table.
Walter and Jenny shared a look, and let him continue.
âGoshawks are rare and hard to find. Beautiful creatures, living in the forest. Ferocious killers, though we wonât go into that,â and he grinned and paused.
âIs that it?â said Jenny.
âNo, lassie. You should know that when I am let out into the yard for exercise, I shall fly away over the wall, and you will be mystified where I have gone. Though now I have told you what I am, perhaps you wonât be surprised. Iâll give you a clue. I will fly across Liverpool Bay and perch atop the highest mountain on the Isle of Man.â
âSit down, stop talking nonsense, and letâs get on with things,â said Walter.
âI will sit down, and you will be glad I did, because I have two terrible confessions to make today, but first, I want to advise you overnight I joined the White Nancy Naturist Club, and I reserve the right to discard any clothing whenever I choose, and the weather is suitable. I mean, no one would want to do that in the winter, would they?â and Hamish stood up and began undoing his shirt.
âSit down and behave yourself,â said Walter.
âIn a second, Mr Darriteau. Please be patient, and your patience will be rewarded with startling confessions.â
The man removed his socks and unzipped and dropped his trousers, revealing bright purple boxer shorts. Walter and Jenny shared a horrified look. Cairney slipped his thumbs beneath the elasticated top.
âThatâs far enough!â said Walter. âWe donât need or want to see any more.â
Hamish glanced at a grimacing Jenny, and said, âAh yes, I see, we must not shock the ladies, must we?â And he sat down and pulled in his chair, as the officers stared across the table at the all-but naked muscular man. A moment later, he caught her checking out his pecs.
âImpressive, arenât they?â he said. âBut they donât happen by accident. They have to be worked on. Built up over many years.â
Outside, observing, Mrs West and Darren were enjoying the show.
âThe manâs a complete loon,â said Darren.
âItâs an act,â said Mrs West. âHeâll calm down in a moment.â
âEmily Chatteris?â said Walter.
âWeâll talk about that in a minute.
